IBF Board Member Roberto Rea Passes Away

The International Boxing Federation and the boxing community mourn the passing of IBF Director Roberto Rea of Italy on October 27, 2021. Son of the great Natalino who coached the Italian Boxing Team in the 50s and 60s, Roberto immediately took the managerial path in sports with excellent results. At the age of 25 he was the head of the Italian Boxing Team at the Mediterranean Games and then at the Moscow Olympics.

Subsequently he held the role of Secretary General of the Italian Canoe-Kayak Federation and in the following years held a primary role in Equestrian Sports. He became Secretary General of the Italian Badminton Federation and then of the Billiard Sports Federation. In 2001 Rea was appointed Secretary General of the Italian Boxing Federation. His rise in the sport continued with the European Boxing Union, where he held the position of vice president. Shortly after Roberto established a very fruitful relationship with the IBF, where he rose to the position of European Representative and later was elected to the Board of Directors in 2014 at the organization’s convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His work in boxing has been appreciated by many having supervised hundreds of fights throughout Europe and the world. He will be greatly missed by many in the boxing community. He reaches his beloved wife Alessandra in heaven and together they will “supervise” their daughter Francesca Romana and their beloved granddaughter Giulia.

PLANT vs. CANELO L.A. PRESSER FOR NOV 6 FIGHT

International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Caleb Plant met challenger Canelo Alvarez at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California for press conference in promotion of their IBF title bout on November 6, 2021.

“I know only one thing better than proving people right, and that is proving people wrong.  I have been doing that my whole life.  As soon as I stepped on the stage, people started talking about what I cannot accomplish and what I cannot do.  What I come from, there was no boxing community.  There was no other pro I could look to and say that if he can do it, I can do it.  All he had was my mind in my heart,” said Plant, who will be making the fourth defense of the IBF title.  The Tennessee native won the championship in January 2019.

Alvarez will look to become a three time International Boxing Federation middleweight champion.  Haling from Guadalajara Mexico, Alvarez won the IBF title in September 2017 with a split decision win over Gennadiy Golovkin, and again attained the title in May 2019 with a unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs.

“I know what I need to do and I know a lot about him.  He is a good fighter but I know my skills.  My experience is going to give me the edge in the fight.  I have faced similar styles to Caleb’s against Floyd Mayweather, Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout and Billy Joe Saunders.”

Plant vs. Canelo for the International Boxing Federation middleweight title takes place on November 6, 2021 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
